...and finally
So, it is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to acknowledge, and indeed apologise, for a spelling error in last week's column.  It has been pointed out to me (with a an uncharitable amount of glee, it must be said) that I missed the auto-correction of "sight" to "site".

It is safe to say, that I am mortified.

Not only have I missed this glaring error, but to have it pointed out by, of all people, a Scotsman, well...embarrassing doesn't begin to cover it.

I was going to take the opportunity this week to talk about a rather interesting recent study into how we actually read.  It was discovered that we tend to read the first and last letters of longer words and that is generally enough to understand the intended message even if the rest of the letters are mixed up.

For example: "Tehre is a mmeber of the culb, who is an anonynig Soctitsh pdenat"

There is no excuse, however, for the error and I am sorry - I will attempt to drink less wine when writing these witterings in future (no promises though).

What I wanted to talk about this week, was not the golfing world, which has been less that exciting so far (ignoring Sergio's hole-in-one knock-out blow to Lee Westwood in the WGC Matchplay sudden death play-off), and instead I wanted to focus on the big news of the week which is the apparent inability of a certain ship to travel in a straight line.

The Merchant vessel, "Ever Green" is quite the remarkable feat of human endeavour.  She is 400 metres long, and 60 metres wide, displacing over 200,000 tons - which is impressive to say the least, but a bit of context is required

400 metres is the length from the front of the men's tee to the front of the green on the 11th hole.

60 metres is twice the length of the 16th green

200,00 tonnes.....well, it's a lot. It's the equivalent of 400,000 golf buggies

Now it would seem that the crew of this behemoth fell foul of a 40 knot wind that pushed the ship sideways, while a sandstorm reduced the visibility along the 200 metre (about the length of the 6th hole from the men's tee) wide canal, and once an object of this size gains sufficient momentum in any direction, it's going to be a bugger to stop.

The result is the kind of blockage normally only found when one member of the 4 ball in front of you finally accept the reality that they have, really, driven it out of bounds and that they have to, abjectly, return to the tee that you are patiently waiting on, in order to replay their tee shot.  It goes without saying that said player will all the while be muttering that it was never out of bounds, further complaining that their playing partners, slash friends, were clearly more interested in getting them to buy the beer, rather than finding their ball (it is a well known rule of golf that the subsequent tee shot will immediately head towards the out of bounds fence like some sort of homing missile).

I believe, therefore, that as golfers we should all have a certain amount of sympathy for the Captain and crew of the good ship, Ever Green, as we too are used to being unable to go in a straight line down a clearly defined pathway, and we too are more than happy to blame the wind for any massive slice off the tee - "The wind's got that one"

Of course, if any of the stuff I ordered online happens to be delayed because of this, then I might well ask what the hell the idiot who was "steering" was actually doing, but then again, there are times when holding the pose at the end of a swing when I have often wondered the exact same thing.

Stay safe and play well (but watch out for that wind)
