...and finally
I was all prepared to go on about the Masters this week, as it approaches it's climax this evening/tomorrow morning, having heard a number of remarkable stats (for example, over his professional career at Augusta National, Phil Mickelson is 78 under par for the 13th hole, and about level for the rest of the course).  Hideki is looking good with a 4 shot lead, but as anyone who has watched the Masters through the years, anything can happen when you reach the back 9 on a Sunday.

Then, of course, came the news yesterday that HRH Prince Phillip passed away at the age of 99.

Now I am not exactly a Monarchist, but I am not that anti the institution either (although I question why the State needs to fund them, the Crown Estate is one of the largest landowners in the UK, and it owns some prime Real Estate too).

Regardless of my views however, it is hard not to appreciate a life of service and dedication to duty.  The man put his career second to his wife's in an era where that most certainly was not the accepted way of doing things.  Certainly some of his comments went well beyond the pale into the realm of downright outrageous, but (and this is not an excuse), he was a product of his upbringing and his background.  Also, to be fair, every submariner I have met (and I have met a few - there have been times I wonder how I seem to attract quite so many oddballs - maybe the UK had more than it's fair share?) are more than just a wee bit unusual, as we all would be if we were cooped up in a sardine tin with a bunch of other men for months, hiding under the waves from people who very much do not want you to be there.

An avid sportsman, he was captain of his cricket and hockey teams at school before moving on to the accessible sports of errr, polo and carriage racing. Not exactly sports of the people, but he did encourage participation in all sports, and was keen to stress the indirect benefits of participation, particularly in playing a game in the right spirit.

As he was more of a cricketer than a golfer, he would no doubt be miffed at missing out on his 100, but had he been a golfer, he may well have been happy not to break that same mark.

He was lucky enough to live a life of immense privilege and he certainly wasn't perfect, but then again who of us is. What he was prepared to do though, was to stick to his principles (however misguided or not they may have been) and try to do the best he could, performing his duties up until the ripe old age of 96, when many others may well have stepped down.

Who of us could argue with that?

Therefore, I doff my cap to a remarkable man, and pass on my condolences to his family, mourning the loss of their patriarch

And on that somber note, I will you all the best for the week ahead

Stay safe and play well

Steve
