Club Captain's Message

Shop, Carts & Range

On Saturdays & Wednesdays, until July 17th when Peter Hates starts in Pro Shop, the Match Committee will be in Pro Shop before golf from 10.30am to collect match fees, organize carts & sell range balls.

If you have a late tee time & the shop is closed you will need to pay on completion of your round.

We will need volunteers each day to pick up range balls. If we have 2 each time it will only take approx. 15 minutes, all help is appreciated.

Club Championships

Unfortunately due to weather last week Finals Day was cancelled.

All matches need to be played by 11th July. Please organize these matches & let us know when they are being played so they can be supported.

We will have a Presentation Day on Saturday 17th July after golf for the Championships & Strokeplay Trophies.

Singles Knockout & 4 Ball Knockout sheets are on noticeboard in club house. Names to be up by 26th June.

Thanks

...and finally
As a species, we tend to want to have something that joins us together, that makes us feel part of a bigger group, a like-minded community going through the same trials and tribulations, the same ups and downs, that we all go through.

Most people tend to look for little hints and signs that are more positive than others, while some of us are more maudlin and look for the gloomier side of things, searching for the silver lining that makes every day suffering bearable.

Golfers, generally fit into the latter category, the sport is too full of frustrations for us to be anything other. There are, occasionally, the odd exceptions that will raise a smile throughout the club just with their mere presence and they are to be exalted and enjoyed.

Each of these groups invariable come up with their own verbal shorthand, that helps to identify themselves as part of a certain mind-set.  Indeed, advertisers are paid big bucks to come up with these hooks; you know the ones, the really irritating ear-worms and catchphrases that get on your nerves, or in some golden cases, can evoke rose tinted childhood memories when life seemed simpler and the weather was always warm and sunny (utter tosh, of course, but it makes us feel good).

On Saturday, our fourball came up with a new one of these phrases: 'The Dexter Bounce".

We came up with this on the third hole when, Dexter, with uncharacteristic waywardness, sliced his drive dramatically, to such an extent that we were convinced the ball had gone out-of-bounds.

Well out-of-bounds in fact.

To be honest, I think there were dolphins in the Tasman reaching for their hard-hats, it looked that far right.

The youngest in our group  (annoyingly likeable despite his youth, talent, and far better eyes than the rest of us put together) was convinced, however, that he saw the ball drop out under the hedge.

We, on the other-hand, were certain that the provisional ball (in Dexter's usual, middle of the fairway spot), was going to be in play.  We were obviously wrong. Not only did we find Dex's original ball, but it had, somehow boing-ed off the Southern Alps back into play.

Hence "The Dexter Bounce".

Mark then utilised the "Dexter Bounce" out of the grove of trees on the right hand side of the 5th hole; and I used the "Dexter bounce" to run through the greenside bunker on the 6th.  Unfortunately, Alex and I can confirm, that the "Dexter Bounce' does not come into play when you drive it into the middle of the lake by Number 10.

I find myself looking forward to seeing if this catches on, and hearing more stories of "Dexter Bounces" from other members.

From a positivity point of view, though, I am going to enjoy being part of this particular group (although, being a miserable sod, I am now thinking about what to call the anti "Dexter Bounce" - I am sure we can come up with something)

Stay safe, and play well

Steve
