Summer Golf This starts this Saturday playing for the popular Barbara Angus Trophy. Stableford. This competition will run itself. Pay your money as usual and enter the tee booking system as usual. If Margaret isn’t there to do the finances we will ask someone weekly to do it. Whoop whoop a new system. Lets try it and do our best to make it work. If no one has their name in the tee booking system don’t be afraid put your name in and you will be surprised others will add theirs. ....and finally
|
Well another week has passed us all by, as 2020 starts to draw the curtains in anticipation of the new year dawning just a few short weeks away Which reminds me, a quick note to the Ladies Captain: please be aware that if you weren't the Ladies Captain, you would be banned from this newsletter for mentioning the Ch-word before December, please restrain yourself in future (Bah, Humbug) So the odd year continues with the Masters currently taking place now instead of it's usual spring time home, and as ever the course looks amazing, the text book definition of immaculate. Which it should do, with a veritable army of greenkeepers working day and night (literally) - I looked this up, they have approximately 60 paid staff looking after the course (x40) and grounds (x20), most of whom carry scissors (really) to keep every blade of grass just so. Like us, they also have about 300 members, of which just 3 (that's, three) are known to be women, which I thought was a bit of an odd phrase as it implies that there might be more women members, but the men weren't sure? There are plans to add more ladies to Augusta apparently, presumably not incognito. Unlike our club, the Membership fees are not disclosed on their website, but they are estimated to be about $50k (equates to about NZ$75K - although I suspect this is on the low side of the estimates) as a membership initiation fee, then $15K (about NZ$20K) annual membership fees - annual membership fee revenue, therefore, is thought to be roughly equivalent to six million NZ dollars - definitely not like us, and Lindsay, don't go getting any ideas. Watching the trials and tribulations of the worlds' greatest players reminds me that this sport of ours is the greatest of levelers - world number 2, Jon Rahm topped a fairway wood today, and following it up with a recovery chip that nailed middle stump on the tree just in front of him. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy was duffing his approach into the lake at 15 (he made par though). Our past-time is their job, and while it is always amazing to watch them excel, doesn't it feel great to know that even the best in the world can be reduced to open mouthed astonishment by a small white ball refusing to do as instructed?! Stay well, and play well All the best Steve |
