MAY MAY MAY

Its May and golf now starts at 10.00a.m as this hopefully avoids the frosts.

18 Holers Its all focus on championships this month. The draws are up and the first round must be played by Monday 10 May and the plate draws will go up on the Tuesday. These plates give people and especially those who are new to the game more match play. There is no excuses not to play your matches as we have known to keep May free and I’ve contacted those playing weekend people. Anyone who finds it all too much golf with pennant coming up on Monday I’m free to play in your place so no moaning. Great to see that all the silver division have booked their first round matches in for this Tuesday. Well done. Others should be making a tee booking for their matches as you do not have heaps of time. There are a few new players in the championships so as most of you have many years of experience hopefully you will use that and your wisdom and guide them along—they are our future. When playing your matches you can play the competition of the day as well. Draw has been emailed to you.

Pro-Shop Closure
We have received notice today that Willie Moore is closing the Timaru GC arm of his business (please see attached) at the end of the month

We were disappointed to receive this notice without any warning/discussion, and the committee will be discussing options going forwards.

Should any members have any suggestions, please feel free to send them in to me

Results
We are trialing a variation in how we publish results, and I would be keen to get feedback on what people think

There are a couple of reasons behind the change: firstly, getting the results in a sensible format that suits the newspapers and this email is exceedingly onerous - requiring copying, pasting and tweaking through four different software packages - all of which takes a long time (on average I would estimate it takes about 2-3 hours every week just doing the results).

Secondly, the results are available to all members via the website anyway (in the Members section, just click on the event you are interested in - if anyone needs help finding this, please let me know).

Thirdly, there is a bit of duplication going on, which is a bit of a bug-bear of mine!

Again this is a trial, and we can go back to the old method if needs be, but I do need some feedback please (preferably polite, of course!)

Many thanks

Steve

18 Holes Competition – All Welcome

...and finally
Short and sweet this week as I have been suffering from the lurgy(?) - my family went to Hanmer last Sunday for a bit of a family re-union, husbands excluded.  Of the 16 people there, 12 of them caught a bug that has been doing the rounds up there, and my wonderful children decided to bring it home to share with me.

Children. The gifts that keep on giving.....

I would use this as an excuse for the quality of my game today (Dave Switalla and I lost our pennants match against a couple of quiet Tinwald based Cook Islanders who seemed to delight in sending the ball into orbit), but to be fair, they chipped in twice and we had no answer for that.  I  should also point out that Dave won his match comfortably.

They were good lads, and it was great to play with them, the way one of them (the one I played against) struck the ball beautifully with such power it was remarkable, especially as he moved his front foot during the downswing - you shouldn't be able to do this, and if you want to try it on the range, don't.  Most swings are based on a solid foundation with a smooth transition of power from the back to the front foot as the body twists through the strike zone.   You shouldn't be able to move your front foot during the downswing while weight is moving to that foot and still then smash the ball 300m plus.

But the beauty of golf is that it is a game for all, and finding a way that works consistently for you is more important than having a perfect technique, and I was reminded of that today, and it was a joy to watch (and the way I was playing I needed something to cheer me up!).

I only wish I could still see where the ball lands, although I was slightly more worried today about satellites being knocked out of the sky

Stay safe and play well

Steve
