How to curve the ball (intentionally)

Aim your body where you want the ball to start & aim your club face to where you want the ball to finish, then just swing normally along your body line

For a right-hander a hook should start right and curve back & a slice should start left and curve back

Try it on the Practice Area first, then you’ll know how to do it when you need to on-course

Club President's Annual Report

Presidents Report 2018/19

It’s once again my pleasure to present my report for the 2018/19 golf season. The past year has been a very busy year for the club with lots of activity both on and off the course. In general terms the club is in good heart but as with all sporting organisations we are always looking at ways to make being a member of our club a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

Our Strategic Plan group have not meet a lot this year but the committee has been working on and ticking off some of our goals. There will be a refresh in the New Year so we can refocus and keep progressing forward.

Growing Participation

The reopening of the Pro Shop by Willie Moore has been a bonus for the club. To have the shop open and stocked with the golf carts parked outside makes the course feel like we are open for business. Willie is working hard to help us promote the club and organise some competitions during the summer.

Our membership has grown again slightly and the number of rounds played is also up slightly on the previous year where we had a huge jump. The Play Six and Have a Fix on Monday nights is continuing to be a very popular way of introducing new people to golf and I must thank Cath Preen and her helpers for running this over the summer. Our Twilight competition on Thursdays organised by Russell Crossan and Kath McCreanor have once again enjoyed great turnouts with the best field so far this year of over 100 players. Well done Russell and Kath.

With the loss of Malcolm Wood from Aorangi golf the junior programme has not progressed but we are looking at a new initiative involving a number of clubs to help promote junior golf in the area.

Sustainable Systems

We have our new website up and running and our social media presence on Facebook is continuing to grow. I understand some of our members have a reluctance to use Facebook but it is a great tool to get stories and information out not only to members but also the wider public in an instant. I would urge all members to have a look at the Timaru Golf Club Facebook page, like it and you will pick up a lot of information and see the photos that are taken throughout the year.

The Dotgolf system is up and running and once we got our heads around how it works has been very useful. We are still learning new tricks with the system but if the correct information is entered into the system it works fine and is a great tool for the match committee. It has also made communication with our members more efficient with the ability to send bulk emails and we are now using Dotgolf for our subscriptions.

We are also now using Zero as our accounting package which is all linked in with Dotgolf making our club management more efficient.

Facilities

The building of a new shed so we can house all our machinery securely in one place, along with improving our workshop was a priority but unfortunately resistance from members for another big fundraising effort has not seen this progress. This issue is not going to go away and will need to be addressed.

Improvements on the clubhouse have been ongoing through the year with new carpet, ladies changing area improvements, lighting in the men’s changing rooms and the removal of the structure above the bar. Ian Poulter has been very busy painting both inside and outside the clubhouse.

The trees along the eastern boundary are also a big issue and due to lack of maintenance over the years are another problem that is not going away.

Grounds

Our course continues to be presented in a high standard and this is due to the efforts of our solid group of volunteers. There has been some minor changes with some new trees planted at strategic places. We have purchased some new machinery and reconfigured the irrigation control to enable more accurate monitoring of our water use. This year we will be purchasing a new greens mower to replace our current machine that has 4500 hours on the clock. Most courses turn mowers over at 2500 hours. If conditions allow we would like to make some more alterations on a couple of holes.

General

This year we celebrated the club’s 125th Jubilee. We had a celebration day of golf but unfortunately the interest from members for any further celebrations was not as great as I thought it might have been. I think it’s a sign of the times and goes to show that people are more interested in today, not yesterday.

The club hosted the Freyberg Masters in November and due to the hard work of Brian Leonard and his team who organised and ran the event the tournament was very successful. The volunteer groundstaff presented the course in outstanding condition and the visiting players could not get over the quality of the course or the fact that we did not employ a greenkeeper. They were also very complimentary of the way our members helped make the tournament run smoothly by supplying starters, people to run the progress boards, our liaison people and the guys running the practice area. Simon Ritchie was also praised for the quality of his food at the opening cocktail party. Well done to all those that helped make the week a success.

Last year I did a presentation on a proposed Golf Hub. It was decided by the members of the Hub committee that it would be better to make this a stand-alone organisation with the idea of developing a learning facility at the current Highfield Golf Course. This way all clubs can be part of picture and not just three. A Trust has been formed and we are currently working with Highfield Golf Club, the Timaru District Council and New Zealand Golf to move this idea forward.

Congratulations to all our members who have achieved representative honours this year. A special mention of Daniel Perham who played his 100th interprovincial match at the recent tournament at Bridge Pa in Hastings. A truly wonderful achievement over a distinguished career.

To all our club trophy winners congratulations on your performances. Getting your names on the honours board and trophies is an effort worth celebrating.

This year Janya Lobb has stepped down from the treasurer role. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Janya for all her time over the years, and welcome Kerrie Cady into the role of treasurer.

To our committee a huge thank you for your hard work over the past year. If it wasn’t for the time and effort put in by you people running the day to day operation of the club it would be impossible for us to function. Susan Brown is stepping down as Ladies Club Captain and is having a very well earned break, thank you Susan for your work. Thanks also to David Irvine for your work as Mens Club Captain before you stepped aside and Lindsay Hewitson who stepped into the role. I would like to think we could get some new people willing to take on roles within the club. Please don’t be afraid to step forward.

Ian Poulter has done a fantastic job as Secretary and his communication via newsletters, emails and Facebook posts has been a huge benefit to the club.

Finally I would like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please make sure you come out make the most of the wonderful course we have at Levels and do your bit to make the Timaru Golf Club the club of choice.

I move my Annual Report be adopted.

Harvey King

Annual House Report

HOUSE REPORT 2019

Dear Members

This has been another great year for our Golf Club. Good to see a few new members.

The new carpet looks great, with grateful thanks to Don McLean for his help in making this happen. A big thanks to Ian Poulter for doing the majority of the lifting of the old carpet, with help from others. More thanks to Ian, who has only been with us a short time, and has done a lot of work around the club house, including painting inside and out, and also the attached flat they live in.

Thanks to our caterer Simon and his team for putting up great food, and taking care of the bar. This was a big effort for the National Freyberg Masters week, so thanks for the great team work.

Big thanks to Lindsay for keeping the beer lines clean.

A big thank you to the ladies for cleaning the club house and thank you to those who helped me keep the men’s dressing room and toilets clean.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Fred Ng

P.S. I would also like to thank my Penney Salver team for making the semi-finals this year. Well done guys.

Several members have decided to continue playing as 9 Holers and that is great.Thank you to Sharon for keeping them up to date with competitions and tournaments.
Thanks to Cath Preen for organising and keeping the new players up to date for the Sixes and also the other club member who assist on a Monday night.

Again we did not enter a team in the Champion of Champions and as there was a change of date and venue.

Thanks to those who do gardens, window washing, clubhouse cleaning and especially the members who organised the washroom update, just waiting for the finishing of the painting, then we can look at ourselves again in the mirrors. We now have the new floor covering as well, so looking good but there is always something needing attended too.
To Rosie for organising and keeping the weekend players up to date thank you.
To Kathy for making sure the morning tea etc and supply of towels and loo paper are
always in stock a most important job thanks.
My thanks to Miriam for helping me out with draws an info on tournament days, to other committee members thank you for your assistance during the year.

Men's Club Captain Annual Report

Club Captains Report 2019.

To say the least it has been a very interesting year when it comes to the men’s match committee activities. Firstly during the year we had some intense debate regarding the makeup of the Saturday competitions. In the end the club agreed to make changes which meant the former men’s only competition is now open for the women to play in as well. With all changes that are made to something that has run for many years, not everyone agrees, and unfortunately our Club Captain made the decision to resign his position. As we had no elected deputy I put myself forward to fill the role for the remainder of the year. Since that time I must acknowledge the contribution of the other members of the match committee who have given me great support namely Dave McEwing, George Emond, Stu Chapman, Craig Miller and Dave Hall.

Secondly as a committee we experience a very challenging year coming to terms with the new Dot Golf card system. This way of doing the starting and results has made a significant difference in the way we run our match day competitions. I think in the main for the better but in the early stages we did have a few moments where we could have easily thrown the new system and computer into the pit behind no 14. But with all new technology it takes time to learn and I believe we now have a better understanding of how it works and what it can or can’t do. I must acknowledge the work of David Irvine in setting up our programme into the system and for passing on his knowledge of how it works to the rest of us. We have made a few changes to our programme for next year as some of our regular matches cannot be accommodated with in the new system. I would also like to thank the members for their patience during this time.

Club Champs.

The club champs went off reasonably well this year with most matches completed by the appointed dates and 3 of the four finals being played on the Finals day.

Winners: Senior: Daniel Perham over Ray (Greenie) Grant

Intermediate: Dave Schrader over Kevin Leary By default

Junior A: Fred Ng over Ron Hobbs

Junior B: Ross McDonald over Eddie Megaw

Singles Knockout was won by John Norton and the 4 Ball knockout was won by Pat Collins and John Norton. Congratulations to all the winners.

Orbell Cup

It was our turn to travel to the Christchurch Golf club for our annual tournament. Unfortunately as the defending champions of both trophies we could not retain either. It clashed with rep golf which meant we couldn’t field our strongest teams. Very disappointing that we could not get 8 Ladies in the club to make up 1 team. A good day was had by all and a fun trip home for those in the van. My thanks to George for standing as Club Captain for the day and giving his usual high quality reply on behalf of the club.

Pennants

Not a vintage year as far as pennants went with only 1 team, Timaru 2 making the final in the Hayes Cup and 2 other teams Timaru 1 in the Holmes and Timaru 1 in Penny Salver making the semi-finals. This was out of 8 teams, our largest number of teams during my time in the club. A big thank you to all the members who organised the various teams as this is a very difficult job at times with many phone calls and many rejections but in the main making sure we managed to field a team.

A big thank you to the few players in each team who made the commitment to play on a regular basis to those who filled in at the last minute.

Hopefully we have a more enjoyable pennant season as Aorangi have set a much better programme for next season

Tournaments

Spring Tournament

To Nevis Jones and his hard working committee a big thank you for the work you did putting together our annual tournament. I understand it was a great success with the largest field for a number of years. Congratulation to the men’s winners Damian Rodgers and Daniel Perham, this was a top effort to win a tournament such as this when you both are such low handicaps. Well done.

Bristol Cup

Another successful annual event was held in March with Fairlie Golf Club winning the tournament. A special thanks to David Irvine for all the work he put into the Organisation and running of this event.

Freyberg Masters

The club hosted this national event in early November which went off very well with a lot of positive feedback from all those involved. A special thanks to Brain Leonard and his helpers for all the work they put into the organising and running of this tournament. Also a big thank you to the club volunteers who helped help in various capacities during the tournament.

An extra special mention to all the volunteers who help out with the preparation of the course and congratulations on how you presented the course for the tournament and for the S.I. masters held a month earlier. I must single out Graeme Brown and Harvey King who led this band of merry men and thank them for the many hours of extra work they both put in to ensure this tournament was a success.

Finally as I am not seeking re-election to this position, I wish Dave McEwing and Craig Miller all the best for the coming year and know that with the support of a strong match committee the club will be well served in men’s match activities.

Lindsay Hewitson

Annual Finance Report

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT 2019

Financial Statements for the year ending 30 September 2019 have been reviewed. These statements show the club in a sound financial position with a good result for the year. A trading surplus of $18429 was achieved after depreciation of $53970 and obsolete asset write-down of $4060. While the surplus was down on the previous year this has not affected our equity which has increased by $50k.

Income

Our income $247973 ($256592) was down on the previous year.

Bar income remained about the same, membership income was up $13k, however grants and donations were down about the same amount. Sundry income was back on the previous year which had included trees sold in that year.

Another successful 100 club raffle was run along with a popular mid winter fundraising dinner.

Expenses

Our expenses $229544 ($194056) were up on the previous year. Our grounds expenses were up, however, were still well within the budget of $90k. We continue to be able to keep our grounds expenses under control because of the unpaid time in maintaining our course by Graeme and his team. We have saved labour costs through volunteers assisting with other things, e.g. painting of the clubhouse. All of our volunteers have contributed to keeping our costs down. Club house costs were up through ongoing repairs and maintenance. Major items included, installation of new toilets, hand basins, bench and cabinet in the ladies rooms (cost substantially offset with donations from a few ladies), replacement of part of the ceiling in the ladies change rooms, improved lighting in the men’s change rooms, sound & PA system and additional power outlets to cart sheds. It is pleasing to report standing charges and administration costs were back on the previous year. Capital purchases during the year included DotGolf computer card system, gator, ventrac tractor unit and accessories, rotary spreader and irrigation pump and controller. Total cost of these items was $103705 (GST excluded). The purchases were financed by a generous donation from a member (DotGolf system), interest free loans from other members (ventrac unit) a grant and funds at bank.

Irrigation Development

This is recorded in a separate section in the Profit and Loss accounts under the heading, Other Income and Expenses. This is done to identify the ongoing income and expenses associated with that project. However this year, the one off donation of $25000 from StAndrews Golf Club has been included in this section. The loan from the Timaru District Council is on track to be fully repaid in June 2021.

Ongoing Expenditure

It is planned to buy a new greens mower in 2020 at a cost of up to $55k and we already have a grant of $15000 for this. Repainting of the ladies toilets to complete the refurbishment. Replacement of the implement shed is a priority. Resealing of the driveway and car parks are also planned along with another building for the cart storage. To finance these will require a major fundraiser.

I would like to thank our outgoing treasurer Janya Lobb and committee Harvey King and Tony Preen for their input and help over the year. I welcome Kerrie Cady as our new treasurer.
